Your maintenance window
Your maintenance window is the time of day when we're allowed to do planned work on your store that may take it offline briefly. You choose it, so planned work happens when your store is quiet — never in the middle of your busiest hours.
You set it when you create your store, and you can change it any time on the Settings tab, under Platform maintenance window.
What uses it
Planned work only ever starts inside your window:
- Magento updates you've scheduled from Update Magento — there's no "update now"; an update waits for your next window.
- Plan changes — your store moves to resources that match its new plan.
- Message broker switches — the new broker is set up as part of the same move.
- Platform updates — about once a month your store moves onto an updated, security-patched server. The work can take up to an hour; your store stays online apart from a brief pause.
Nothing planned starts outside your window. Work that's waiting simply starts during your next one.
Things you start yourself — maintenance mode, clearing caches, the rebuild buttons, custom commands, installing extensions, restores — run straight away and don't wait for the window.
Setting it
A window has:
- A start and an end time, for example 02:00 to 04:00. A window can run past midnight — for example 23:00 to 01:00.
- The days it applies to — every day by default. Pick at least one; with no days, planned work could never run.
- A time zone, as a name such as
UTC,Europe/DublinorAmerica/New_York. Using a place name means the window follows daylight-saving changes.
The default window is 02:00–04:00 UTC, every day.
A change takes effect straight away — including for work that's already scheduled and waiting.
Choosing a good window
- Pick the hours with the fewest orders. Your Monitoring tab's request chart shows when your store is quietest.
- Set the time zone to where your shoppers are, not where you are, if they differ.
- Keep it at least an hour or two long, so waiting work has time to start.
- If you'd like an update or plan change to happen soon, temporarily move the window to a time later today, then move it back afterwards.
- A brand-new store isn't moved during its first hours, so a plan change or broker switch booked straight after creating a store may wait for a later window.
